Get die photos of some of the most competitive chips inside the Google Nexus One

Chipworks has worked with the good people at iFixit to go inside the Google Nexus One phone. iFixit has documented an excellent teardown of the Nexus One device. We have examined the highest value and most contested silicon by decapsulating the devices and taking die photos and "advanced" die photos of the metal 1 or poly layer.

We begin with the teardown of the "downstream part." Inside, the phone was made up of two key boards. Unlike some other phones we have analyzed, these boards are not purpose-built to either applications processing or wireless functionality. This board contains a lot of the power management for the phone.

The second board is used for the heavy processing. Notably, it contains the Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 device that was actually a three die multichip package, the Audience voice processor, and a Qualcomm transceiver.

Here are a few of the die photos that were taken of this device (low resolution). You can order these die photos in high resolution today.
Our lab created die photos and advanced die photos of the devices that won some of the most competitive sockets. You can order these die photos today for delivery to your inbox.
A die photo is produced with optical imaging of a decapsulated device at 10X – 20X. It is an image mosaic that provides the detail for resolving key features. For example, the die photo of the Samsung memory chip found in the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip is a mosaic of 224 optical images. Final image size is typically 5 – 10 megapixels in size; delivered as a high resolution pdf.
An advanced die photo is created by removing all the upper metal layers from the bare die, down to the lowest layer (metal 1 or poly). It exposes the details about the functional blocks. This level of detail is used by Design and Product Management teams for semiconductor competitive benchmarking.
These die photos are available for immediate ordering via purchase order or credit card. To order, please download and complete the order form.
